Cowboys and Cookies – the High Line Park Tour

Starting with a walkthrough of the now trendy meatpacking district including the Collier Publishing building, guests walk along the park’s 1.45 mile built on a section of the former elevated freight railroad spur. Over and above the history and the development of the High Line licensed guides include some of the unique plant life along the trail and commissioned artwork sprouting up along the trail, and prominent historical and modern architecture. Unusual information such as urban cowboys who travelled up and down 10th Avenue in the early 1900’s as well as the invention of the Oreo cookie right here in New York are some of the odd facts included in the tour. Pier 59, the intended docking spot for the Titanic which can still be seen from the High Line, is also discussed on the tour.

From Sails to Sales – the South Street Seaport

From the earliest days of sailing ships to the bustling retail center of today, “Sails to Sales” tour will take you by the old streets, bars and taverns, shops, houses and ships that made this area the “gateway” to the world. Starting with the wealthy Schermerhorn’s who built a large row of buildings at the seaport, to sailors from all over the world who found entertainment at the seaport with prostitutes, dog and rat fights, our tour covers many different facets of early seaport life. The Seaport opened up much of our trade to China and other parts of the East and, starting in the 1840’s, was the focal point for the beginnings of the ocean liner industry. You will be but a few steps from many of the greatest parts of New York’s history including the Brooklyn Bridge, to places like the famous Fulton Fish market and the Paris Cafe, where in 1881 one great inventor named Thomas Edison set up shop there as he electrified lower Manhattan. Guests will learn how the seaport developed in the 1800’s then fell into abandonment to finally being New York’s favorite shopping and dining hangout today.

911 Memorial and Museum Tour

On the enhanced 3-hour tour, you will see all the sights of the 2.5-hour tour plus a preview of the 9/11 Memorial museum with timed tickets to the museum. The Museum is an underground museum which has various artifacts of September 11, 2001, and pieces of steel from the Twin Towers, such as the final steel, which was the last piece of steel to leave Ground Zero in May 2002. Exhibits in the museum include 23,000 images, 10,300 artifacts, and nearly 2,000 oral histories of the dead provided by friends and loved ones, in addition to over 500 hours of video.
